Event details

Experience the thrill of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, a premier event that unfolds along the rugged North Shore of Minnesota. This esteemed race, initiated in 1980 by musher and historian Frank Moe, honors the legacy of John Beargrease, a winter mail carrier who traversed the same terrain by dog sled in the late 19th century.

Starting at Billy’s Bar in Duluth, this marathon spans over 300 miles, testing the endurance and teamwork of world-class mushers and their canine athletes. The route winds through the breathtaking Sawtooth mountains, offering spectators a glimpse into the harsh yet beautiful landscapes of northern Minnesota.

This event is a must-attend for outdoor enthusiasts, dog lovers, and those fascinated by the rich history of sled dog racing. With easily accessible checkpoints and road crossings, it provides ample opportunities for photography, winter camping, and cozying up around campfires. Close to 400 volunteers ensure a seamless experience, making it a welcoming and exhilarating adventure for all. As a qualifier for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Alaska, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon promises an unforgettable experience of skill, endurance, and the unbreakable bond between mushers and their dogs.
